I'm a regular at TGH, I don't really post here much (this is my first) but I thought I started this thread here so that we can 1. Help humanity, and 2. Create a consciouness in Guild Wars with the Tech community as well. Help if you can.

I was thinking, with all the people here, perhaps we can start a [email protected] team. If you don't know what Folding is please go to this link http://folding.stanford.edu/ and learn more about how it and how you can help. Basically, it's another distributed computing project, except that this one is more worthwhile. Don't worry, it only uses your CPU time when you're not playing, or doing anything with your computer.

I have already create a team calls Guild Wars Fans, team number 43292. When you set up the client , just make sure that you put in the team number. Right now, I don't have a site for stats, but you can check your stats any time by going to the Stanford's stats page . There, you can check current team's progress and your personal advancement.

Previously, I folded for another team, but since I will be starting over, I figure it's good to create another team. Regardless, it's good to fold!

And for everyone else, if you're a college student, this is a great way to use your school's bandwidth. Pfft, they can spare a little for a good cause.

But yeah, I think the grid is more like a project to predict if the X-Men will run amongst us one of these day, vs. the actually usefull project by Stanford to find cures for diseases that currently plague humanity.

Actually, if you did any looking into Grid.org, you'd find out that it benefits Folding directly.

Over half of the data that's sent to my computer is for the Folding project. The other data is for cancer research. Before it was completed, Grid.org also sent out processing data for a smallpox study.

I'd like to bump this, despite its incredibly old age.
[email protected] is still running, and it's still just as relevant today.

I'd only just started using distributed computing programs recently, and I have to say, I'm enamoured with the concept.

Today, I've run [email protected] almost the entire waking day with no problems. I can browse the internet, chat on MSN, and post on the forums while it runs in the background. I can't effectively play Guild Wars with it on, but it still gets a lot of mileage the rest of the time.

You don't even have to run it overnight to get progress done. If you use your computer for non-gaming for a few hours a day like I do, you can complete a work unit in a few days without any deviation in your normal computer usage.

No significant increase in electrical usage, no inconvenience, there's no real reason not to get involved in these kinds of things. You can make a difference from your own home with little more than a few clicks, and it's amazing.

I'm not saying I feel like a Saint because I'm donating a little CPU usage; hardly. I'm saying it's so simple, I should have started years ago ><

Wikipedia has a sizable list of other projects you can look into, as seen in my signature.

To the best of my knowledge, there are few to no referral programs, and little compensation for the work done. There's no recognition for being charitable. To participate in such projects are generally purely out of goodwill and fellowship, and an interest in being a part of something big.

But a few do offer compensation if that's your thing, such as GIMPS;

If you're looking for ways to get active, but you lack transportation, or time, or whatever else, this is something nice to look into.
